Relay is an electromagnetic or electronic switching device activated by a signal and usually used to control a large current or to activate another device or circuit. As seen in the drawing below, when the switch is closed, a 12V signal from the battery flows to the relay which in turn closes the relay switch and turns on the indicator bulb.
