Resistors

Resistor is a component with a specific resistance, used to control the current in a circuit. The unit of resistance is the Ohm, and the symbol for resistance is the Greek letter omega W.

How to read Resistor Color Codes?

Each color band (strip, ring etc.) is associated with a number as represented below:

Black=0, Brown=1, Red=2, Orange=3, Yellow=4, Green=5, Blue=6, Purple=7, Gray=8, White=9

Find the tolerance color band, typically gold ( 5%) and sometimes silver (10%).
Starting from the other end, identify the first color band and write down the number associated with that color as in the chart above.
Identify the next color band and write down the number associated with that color.
Identify the next color band and write down that number of zeros. The third band or '"multiplier" band indicates the number of zeros.

Please note:

If the "multiplier" color band is Gold move the decimal point one to the left.
If the "multiplier" color band is Silver move the decimal point two places to the left.
If the resistor has one more band past the tolerance band it is a quality band. In this case read the number as the % (percentage) failure rate per 1000 hours. This rating assumes full wattage being applied to the resistors.
Finally 1% resistors have three bands to read digits to the left of the "multiplier". They have a different temperature coefficient in order to provide the 1% tolerance.

Example:

Green, Brown, Red, Gold (color bans left to right)

Green=5, Brown=1 and Red the third ring multiplier is 2 (two zeros) we get resistor with value of 5100 Ohms or 5.1K Ohms.
The last color band indicates that this resistor has a tolerance of 5% therefore the resistor value can range from 4.845K Ohms to 5.355K Ohms.

Calculate Resistors connected in series:

R_Total= R₁+R₂+...R_N

Calculate Resistors connected in parallel:

R_Total= 1/{(1/R₁)+(1/R₂)+...(1/R_N)}
