The PICER-DS2.5-TX is an educational electronics kit that allows you to control total of four seven segment LED (7-SEG) display directly from PIC (PIC16F690) Micro-controller.

The PICER-DS2.5-TX, is the fun and easy way to write to Seven Segments LED Display (7 SEG). temperature reading both in degree Fahrenheit (F) and Centigrade  (C). The unique layout configure to display's +/-199 F or C. Where the kit shipped out configure to to display degree F on the right digit.

where the +/- 199 represent the temperature reading.

One can program the PIC16F690 Micro-controller Flash memory using his/her PICKIT2 (sold directly from Microchip Corporation) directly from a personal computer (PC) via J2 on board connector.

The board utilizes the PIC16F690 IC (20 pin DIP configuration). The board also includes connector (J1) that allows you to connect few 10-bit ADC lines and/or a few I/Os. The J2 connector is for those who desire to connect back light LCD.

This kit utilizing EID 4 digit display to show very accurate temperature (degrees F or C) readings using only few external components on 2.5 digit display format. One can obtain temperature sensor reading form different manufacture, good example is the LM34 a solid state temperature transducer that produce 10mV per degree F. Connecting the sensor to one of the inputs PA or PB  (See schematics above). Simply read the voltage via the ADC (Analog to Digital Conversion) and display it.

The temperature reading obtains from the LM34 in a form of voltage, 1mV per degree Fahrenheit. The device (LM34) output is linearly proportional to their ambient temperature. For example at room temperature 77 degrees Fahrenheit the output voltage is 770mV DC. According to the specification (National Semiconductor TM)  the device provide typical accuracy of +/-0.5 degree F at room temperature, and +/-1.5 degrees Fahrenheit at full operating temperature rang of -50 to 300F.

The board is power of 7-24V DC or AC (The Input PWR which can hold up to 36VDC, we recommend not to exceed 24V). The diodes bridge D1, together with the capacitor C1, will convert input AC voltage to DC Voltage (See above kit drawing).

The other side of the diodes drives the voltage regulator U2 (regulator). the regulator converts varying input voltages and produces a constant regulated output voltage. The regulator LM78L05 produce the necessarily 5V DC required. Adding capacitor C2 in parallel  a 0.1MF eliminates any high frequency AC voltage that could otherwise combine with the output voltage. See above circuit diagram for the kit.
